After Lille, Lyon and Bordeaux, it's Marseille's turn to welcome a Big Mamma restaurant. The eccentric 450-seat trattoria, on the theme of the circus, takes place on rue de la République.
Big Mamma arrives in Marseille !
Since 2015, Tigrane Seydoux and Victor Lugger have been rolling out their Italian catchphrase in 16 restaurants and 13 delivery kitchens in Paris, Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon, Madrid and London. It is now in France's second largest city, in the heart of the 1st arrondissement of Marseille, that the squadra as it likes to call itself, is opening its latest address, Splendido. Apart from the huge La Félicità (in the Station F incubator on 4,500 m² in Paris), Splendido becomes the group's largest trattoria, with 450 covers, including 130 on the XXL terrace. Right next door, Big Mamma is also opening Top Bun, its first restaurant dedicated to burgers, not to mention Napoli Gang, its pizza delivery service that has been serving the metropolis since December.
The address moved into a former H&M after 8 months of renovation. As usual, a wow effect is guaranteed as soon as you enter, with a decor inspired by a fantasy circus world: from Italian tents to travelling trailers that criss-cross the country roads, from fortune-tellers to tattooed dagger throwers.
Several rooms, several atmospheres: here giant animals on blue-striped walls on which Italian tarot cards and Sicilian vases in the shape of heads are displayed, there large leopard-print benches with a feathered chandelier that unfolds like a stripper. And the atmosphere continues until the small corner... Of course, the bar and its hundreds of illuminated bottles, signature Big Mamma, is present from the entrance. All the objects have been found in antique shops, second-hand dealers or collectors.
On the tables, the menu keeps the house classics: fried artichokes alla romana, arancini al tartufo or vitello tonnato to share. The menu continues with vegetarian pasta, spinach pappardelle verdi with fresh basil and parmesan sauce, and of course the signature Neapolitan pizzas, such as the Hot School Musical (red onion cream, roasted peppers, spicy salami).
As Marseille is the place to be, the Mediterranean is in the spotlight. Among friends, we share a Holy Fish, a whole sea bass roasted in the oven, gnocchi allo scoglio and a bouillabaisse with sea bass, cuttlefish and clam ragout. And to match the Canebière even more, the cocktail menu is twisted with Ricard and Pastis, with for example a Mauresque Gump with Ricard and lemon. As for the wine list, which includes 30 references, it is 100% organic.
