THE BEST LUXURY HOTELS IN PORTUGAL

Portugal faces the ocean and is located on the Iberian peninsula, which has helped to forge its culture and identity. The country is best taken slowly like its famous drink named after one of its most beautiful cities; Porto. By looking round, you can discover an photo album of delights filled with beauty from every direction that you look: visit its two big cities, Lisbon and Porto, discover the splendid region of the Algarve in the south of the country or embark for the island of Madeira. Portugal has a strong temperament: on the edge of the sea, inland or on an island, its landscapes never cease to surprise.

YOU'RE GOING TO PORTUGAL ?

Currency: Euro (in €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200 and €500 notes). Banks open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Numerous cash machines. In principle, hotels and restaurants accept bank cards.
Electricity: Standard European plug
Cuisine: The home of piri-piri chicken. Olive oil, garlic, coriander and parsley, which are key flavours in traditional dishes. We like Pastel de Nata, a small pastry cream tart, without forgetting the bacalhau (cod), which is the most popular and famous dish in the Portugese kitchen.
Tipping etiquette: Bills often include a service charge, but a 5-10% tip is the norm.
Transports: For a quick and easy way to get around Portugal, hiring your own car is the best way to go. The road network is good and the signage is satisfactory. The highways (paid and quite expensive) allow you to cross the country from north to south. The express lanes (4 lanes) are free. The speed limits are 50 km / h in towns, 90km / h on the road, 100 km / h on the expressway and 120 km / h on the highway. Taxis: numerous in towns, usually green and black. Transport by train: Good network, although a little cramped.
Top tip: A visit to Portugal wouldn’t be complete without trying a Pastel de Nata. But, be warned, these little custard tarts can become highly addictive.
When to go in Portugal ? Portugal is known for its summer sunshine when its beaches and al fresco restaurants are at their most seductive. But outside of prime tourism season there’s still plenty to see and do. In the spring, wildflowers and almond blossoms burst into life. In the autumn, the cooler weather is ideal for exploring historic sights. And, while the winter can be rainy, it’s a great time to experience the festive celebrations and cosy up with a glass of something special.
