At the end of August, the Accor group's lifestyle brand opened a modern 112-room hotel ideally located between the two railway stations in the Hauts-de-France capital.
8.5 / 10 for the Mama Shelter Lille
This is the brand that goes up in the galaxy Accor. Launched in 2008 in Paris by Serge Trigano (former President of Club Med), his family and the designer Philippe Starck, the lifestyle concept Mama Shelter is developing at a frantic pace in France, Europe and around the world. Already present in Marseille or Toulouse and from November with a second address in Paris, Porte de Versailles Mama Shelter opened its Lille hotel in late August in a new office district, formerly occupied by a parking lot that we will not regret. Its opening is probably the effect of a kick in the anthill: the Lille hotel industry is finally endowed with a troublemaker that combines offbeat universe, large restaurant and affordable prices.
9/10 The situation
Excellent. The hotel is located a few meters from the Lille-Flandres and Lille-Europe railway stations. Thanks to the TGV, we are 35 minutes from Brussels, one hour from Paris and one hour and a half from London. The two metro and tram lines are right at the entrance of the hotel, as is the Euralille shopping center. The main places of interest, such as the Grand-Place, the Belfry and the Old Lille, are within walking distance in less than ten minutes.
9/10 The decor
Difficult to evoke Mama Shelter without lingering his crazy design. Entrance, reception, bedrooms, corridors, elevators ... No place escapes the colorful and offbeat universe of the brand, with the exception of bathrooms that are so sterilized. Seen from the outside, the building looks like a hangar on stilts: a nod to Lille's industrial past. In the bedrooms, stools made of recycled materials act as bedside tables. Masks of animals or superheroes (Iron Man, Batman ...) serve as lamp lampshade. Customers are invited to wear them but not to take them away: they are on sale at the reception. In the bar-restaurant, we spend a lot of time scrutinizing the black ceiling where artists gave themselves to their heart with chalk. It reads, in bulk, quotations, Lille place names, lyrics and a great sun that seems to halo the bartenders.
8/10 The rooms
The 112 rooms, ranging in size from 17 to 37m², are divided into four categories: Small, Medium, Large, XXL. Some are communicating and have a living room. All are distinguished by their generously proportioned beds, worthy of a 5-star. The rooms have a hairdryer, a safe and an empty mini-fridge (not a minibar). The iMac, arranged in some Mama Shelters, are here replaced by very functional widescreen TVs, including free movies. Ecological reflex (which is not indicated in the bathrooms): leave your towels on the hook if you do not want to replace them. If possible, avoid occupying a room just above the terrace of the bar, just to enjoy a perfect calm.
7/10 Services, equipment
The building is visible from a distance but its entrance is not clearly indicated. You have to cross a gate and then go up an alley before finding a sort of lock behind glass doors. From there, an elevator takes us to the lobby. There is, next to the reception, an incredibly well-stocked shop: hats, caps, cosmetics, dishes, notebooks, etc. On the sixth and last floor, the Veranda (bar can be privatized) offers a panoramic view of Lille. Guests have 38 parking spaces (19 euros per day) and valet parking. Pets are welcome in the rooms and common areas, for 25 euros per night. Please note that the hotel does not offer room service.
10/10 The bar and the restaurant
Mama Shelter describes her establishments as "restaurants with rooms above". Moreover, on the website of the hotel, the restaurant is put forward as much as the rooms. Special care is therefore given to this place of 243 m², especially the decor. The menu is prepared by triple-star chef Guy Savoy. There are classics but also some specialties of Lille such as welsh, mussels-chips and potjevleesch. All at 20 euros on average. Thanks to its opening hours (until midnight on weekdays and 2 hours on Saturdays), the place will appeal to locals who lack places where to dine late. The bar-restaurant hosts many events, especially concerts and DJ sets at the end of the week. A brunch buffet is offered every Sunday from 12h to 16h at a price of 35 euros.
8/10 The price-performance ratio
From 69 euros the Small room or 119 euros the XXL room for the non-refundable rate. Count 20% more for the flexible rate. We are in the middle of most hotels Lille less good bill. Breakfast is available at an additional cost of 18 euros (9 euros for children under 12 years old, free for children under 4 years old).
